Introduction
Moór was born in Hungary, and the first concert of the series pays homage to the Slavic cultural region from which Moór originated. You will hear works by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, and Moór.
The second concert explores significant companions of Moór. Moór received lessons in Vienna from Johannes Brahms, and Brahms' influences can also be heard in Moór's "Hungarian Dance." On October 2, 1908, Moór wrote to the violinist Henri Marteau, "For the past two months, Gabriel Fauré has been staying in the same hotel, and we have become very good friends." With Fauré's expressive piano quartet, we remember the friendship between these two composers. The work is tailor-made for the Duplex Piano.
In the final concert of the "2nd Emanuel Moór Concert Series," you will hear Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time." Messiaen completed this piece while in German captivity at the StaLag 8A camp in Görlitz and premiered it there with other imprisoned musicians. The unusual instrumentation of clarinet, violin, cello, and piano arose from the available musicians in the camp, resulting in a unique sound impression. The creation of this work in such a threatening environment, its spiritual message, and its depth make it a key piece of classical modernism.
